I was born in Camaguey, Cuba, and moved to the US two days before I turned 6. I go back to Cuba every year though so I'm still 100% CUBAN!

Hey guys and girls, I guess this is my first post. i live in Canada, but originally from Portugal. I was in cuba, beginning of march, and i'm already planning my next trip there. I'm interested to interact and learn more about cuba.

Sarahphina ... can you tell me if the camaguay ballet troop is just a name for the folkloric ballet troop in cuba or if they are actually situated in camaguay? ... have you ever seen them perform?

Kubanita - it actually is called the Ballet de Camaguey - it started in the early 50's I believe, a branch off from the National School of the Arts (Cubanacan) which is in Camaguey as well. I know that most of the dancers that you see at the resorts in the Santa Lucia area attended the School of the Arts, some for 6 years, from age 10 or 12 to 18, and if they aren't good enough to continue on for the Ballet, they get jobs at resorts (where they probably make more money anyway). I've never seen the ballet, but have been by the theatre dozens of times.

i read an article about them the other day ... i think that they are presently in Martinique ...
the unique thing about them is that they perform what is called "folkloric" ballet ... so i would expect to see more of the passion and soul that is cuba ... more so than what is found in the traditional ballets ...
i would love to see them one day
here is the article if you are interested ...

Kubanita - yes I think I read they were in Martinique at the moment too. I keep saying I'm going to go, but either end up too busy and don't get around to it or they aren't performing when I'm there. I may be in Camaguey next week, I'll have to check the schedule. I'll post some pics if I catch them!

... have a wonderful vacation!

Kubanita - I'll see if I can get a schedule for the rest of the year, whether I get to see them or not and will post. If not next week, will be travelling September 3rd.

"so far"? ... does that mean you will go back again?

@Kubanita: "so far":
Yes, I met some people there whom I want to see again.
Infact, without that, I think I wouldn't return to Cuba.
People are nice, but if you are in situations where you depend on authorities you are lost, mightless, and I don't like that.
If you're coming by - Welcome to Bonn/Germany !

... i guess the trick is to not get in the position to depend on authorities ... but that would be quite impossible ... given that the authorities control everything ... :cheesy:
100 km? i'll be there for sure ... always wanted to visit germany ... my girlguide leader came from there ... she taught me to love marzapan and edelweiss ... among many other things ... when the wall came down she could finally bring her aging mother to canada ... it was a very emotional time ...

London mate I'm from London.
The anouncer lady at the Nacional Hotel when I saw the Buena Vista Social club was walking around asking the punters which country they came from.
She asked me.
I said,"London."
She said,"Is that a country ?"
I said,"No it's London!"
She replied,"You are a very special man!"
I thought,'I bet she doesn't ask me for my phone number?'
I thought Americans were not allowed to visit Cuba ? 10,000 dollar fine and all that.

I think the Ballet de Camaguey and the Folkloric Ballet of Camaguey are probably two different groups.
I saw the Ballet de Camaguey here in Havana a few years ago. (One of my wife's friends was a dancer with them.) They were a normal ballet company - not "folkloric".

Hola Cubamaniacs. I'm from London Ontario and I kick myself that it wasn't until 2003 that I started vacationing in Cuba. Since then I've had had the pleasure of visiting six times and I'm looking forward to my next trip in November. What a wonderful place to go,! It's the people are who really make Cuba so special.
