Internet in cuba? Access to people?

I have a friend in Cuba that we chat online every once in awhile via yahoo messenger. Does anyone know why you can communicate via messenger sometimes and other times you can see that the person is online but they can not see you are sending them messages?? Anyone help me out. I havent been able to contact my friend now in a few days and that is very unusual. Thanks.

If you don't "log out" properly from Yahoo messenger before switching off your computer, you still appear online for your friends even you're not. It happened to me in Europe, nothing to do with Cuba (excepting the electricity short factor).

Now, many of the Cubans have internet access thru their university and in August usually, universities are closed.
