I'm a big game fishing maniac from England and traveled to Cuba no less than 5 times in last 2 years fishing from boat and shore.
I have booked 2 further trips in March 05 [ Havana + Cayo Coco] and Sept.05 [Cayo Guillermo / Cayo Coco]
I would be interested to hear from anyone who has recently caught a Marlin or sailfish or have heard any recent stories of anyone catching one of these magnificent fish.

I would be interested in the area, depth of water and time of year and if you were able to tag and release.

Also has anyone caught any large tuna?

The Blue Marlin in the attached photo, a 220lb Blue Marlin caught out of Cayo Coco on September 03

Also photo's of Sail Fish , Dorado and Big Barracuda [40lb]

I look forward to hearing from you

Stewart ;)

Lebluet, the reason you can't see his picture is that there isn't one et bonne chance on the marlin

Stewart, go and create an album at the CubaManiacs group at MSN...

http://groups.msn.com/CubaManiacs/shoebox.msnw

Then put the link in your post

Yo Stewart, here's the link to all of them.

How many times out to catch all of those?

http://groups.msn.com/CubaManiacs/fishingcuba2003.msnw?albumlist=2

btw you should put yourself on the members map so we see where you are from within 2000 miles is close enough *;)

Very impressive, Stewart![smiley=wideeyed.gif]

Tarpon, Marlin in Cuba - yeah. [smiley=yes.gif]

Would you care to share some details - where, how, with whom, how much? Was the tarpon caught in May? Any and all info would be much appreciated.

Jackd / Wade, there are so many stories to tell, it's my intention to post a fishing report when time permits.

No Marlin are not caught on greenbacks [it helps focus the minds of the crew ] *::)

The 100$ bill in the Marlins mouth was a bonus tip for my favorite crew on Marlin VIII the boat I always charter its a fast DC9 which gets you out into the deep waters of the Bahama Channel in no time.
The Marlin was caught on a artificial lure made by Williamson’s called a tuna tamer which I purchased in England, the Marlin ignored the live [dead] trolled bait fish.If you intend doing this sort of fishing be sure to take some lures of your own Kona type , teasers etc, you can't buy them in Cuba. It's all about creating a cammotion behind the boat, be patient > always expect the unexpected ! *8)

How do I go about putting myself on the members map ?

Wade >I will be happy to address any specific questions you may have.

Hi Stewart,

I'm thinking of a one-week Cuba fishing trip in late April, early May and was wondering whether you caught the tarpon in May or September. I fished around Cayo Paredon Grande in February, 2003; it was fun but mostly barracuda. Big tarpon are my goal - I know they have good bonefishing there, too - and was told by my guide, Juanito, that May was a good time. I would also try for some deep-sea fishing - marlin! - and largemouth bass in Laguna Redondo.

Were you fishing with the Guillermo Fishing Club? Did you arrange the fishing beforehand or when you got to Cuba and how? What kind of excursions - half-day, full? I would like to know what kind of rates you paid - can they be negotiated? Was there a guide that you preferred above others? Did you bring your own tackle? Was it really hot and sunny? Did you stay in a hotel nearby?

Thanks.

Stewart or any other readers. I am going to Cayo Coco in mid-oct. Do you know any charter boats in the area and does anybody know if marlin are still around at that time of year? Any advice on shore fishing in the area? Any info on off-shore fishing would be appreciated too. Am a complete virgin at big game fishing but it is a birthday present from the missus!

Hi Wade,As far as I am aware you can catch Tarpon through out the Year, It’s about local Knowledge, where to go, where to fish, type of lure, > so to avoid disappointment use local guides, ask in the hotel, most Cuban’s are fishing crazy.
Deep-sea fishing is a real commitment if you go for the big One’s you will need to go off shore for at least 1 hour in a fast boat or all you will get is Bara’s. picking up your bait/lure, every one in the boat needs to be committed to the same objective, and be aware that you may not catch anything!!!! Take some teasers and big Game lures of your own, you can’t buy them out there and it’s about making your own luck. Speak to your Holiday rep in the hotel they should be able to arrange some boat charter for you, equipment is provided.
If al else fails try speaking to Rey in the Cayo Guillermo Dive Centre, mention my name, he will arrange charter on a very fast DC 9 Boat with excellent crew for around $320 + tips for 6 hours [this is for the boat + crew]. If you book more than 2 or 3 days you will be able to negotiate extra 2 hours inc on your 3rd trip this is useful if you are fishing off shore.

More info to follow > watch this space

All the Best

Hi thanks for your comments, please note there are 19 Photographs on the link, the Marlin [220lb] Sail Fish [65lb > looks heavier than this] Dorado [up to 30lb] Barracuda [big Ones 40lb +]

The Marlin stripped off loads of line and tail danced 400 m behind the boat > it was very angry..!!! I took much care with fighting the fish as we did not want to loose it, One silly mistake and it’s all over > No Fish. About 20 > 30 minutes it was Game Over.

I love to fish in Cuba it’s a challenge to catch the Big One’s, hopefully I will be returning at the end of March 2005 to Cayo Guillermo / Cayo CoCo, my next challenge is to catch large Tarpon, perhaps I should go to the South of the Island for these?

When I’m not out in the Bahama Channel I like to fish the causeway close to the Hotel [Cayo Guillermo] it’s a short walk from the hotel [15min] or a 3$ taxi ride, at the right time you can catch many nice sized Red snapper, if you can find a space between the locals hand lines, there all very friendly and helpful and will supply you with freshly caught sardines by the Bridge.

Good Luck and remember Never Give Up..!!!!

excellent amigo ... would love to see your photos here ... gets me lost sometimes when i click on links ... lost in the world wide web [smiley=laugh4.gif]

here is the secret recipe i used for your photo stewart ... in order for you to see it, i had to change some of the square brackets to round ... if you want to test it and play with it ... just click "quote" to this message and change the brackets inside the quote and preview it ... you will see your picture there when you have it right...

Stewart,
I am holidaying in Cayo Coco in July 05, and wondered if you could give me the benefit of your experience. I want to go out after the big stuff, where do I book charter up? How long do I need to charter for? may need to share boat as there is 2/3 of us. The boat Jucaro you use how much to charter per hour/day? Do i book now or when i get there? Will they supply the tackle? guess i need to take plenty of lures with me. Is there a lot of charter boats in Cayo Coco for hire. Have fished in Varadero, but only caught barracuda.
Regards
