I'm going to cayo coco on dec 5th 2004 and as per my last 4 or 5 holidays will be taking my telescopic rod with 20lb line, size 8 hooks and a load of lead. I usually just buy some shrimp and cast out as far as I can and hope for the best. As you are by now aware, I am not, repeat NOT a professional ;D

I'll be going out on the boats for some big fish but I'll be using thier stuff. Can anybody advise me on some takle to get or how to fish properly. I usually only catch fish about 6 to 8 inches long. Also, could someone tell me the best way to use the small fish as bait for bigger fish?

look, i'm so sorry for being a new person, and I know I can learn a lot from some other posts (which I have) but c'mon.........some feedback or help would'nt go amiss here.

Just because Cayo Coco is an island on the ocean with water surrounding it does not mean it is an angling paradise. It used to be, but the Cubans have effectively netted and or caught by hook and line the majority of fish that WERE there as they do not understand the words conservation or catch and release. There is lots of information on this Fish Cuba BB on fishing the Cayo Coco area - probably more than you will find anywhere on the web, so take a little time and read all of the old posts one by one; take notes or copy the posts and you will know what everyone else knows. :)

With an 4 or 5 kg (8 or 10 lb) spinning rod go out along one of the causeway bridges, or in areas around the islands that look fishy & cut small fish youcatch up into chunks about the size of your thumb finger nail. Put this meat on a number 1 hook with 1/4 - 3/8 oz splitshot and cast it out where you see or think fish will be. You will often see the locals in these areas very early in the morning or very late in the afternoon - fish where they are fishing - most of these guys are very friendly and will help you. They can use hooks as they ones they have available from iron curtain countries are very poor quality so take an abundance of number 1 or 2 hooks and share, you will make a lot of friends this way.
