Hello all my Cuban friends. [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]My wife and i have just returned from a first time ever 2 week trip to Club Amigo in Guardalavaca{near Holguin}.We had a wonderful time, loved the warm and friendly people and the beautiful country with its snow white beaches and tropical lush countryside. It is going to be our winter choice of vacation from now on.We are already planning on our next vacation to Cuba and we would like to stay in Guardalavaca again.I am a very avid fisherman,so here is my question,i've read on the internet of the great largemouth bass fishing that Cuba has on its inland lakes and waters and i would just love to fish for one of these monsters.Would it be possible to fish for 1 to 2 days while i stay at my resort at Club Amigo and i wonder if any thing is close[within a couple of hours].If nothing is close, i would be willing to take a bus,fly or cab to get to the destination. Also i would like a approximate cost of such an adventure.Any info that i may obtain would be much appreciated or someone might know a contact where i could seek help in this mater.Thank you for all your time and trouble.Gary and Nina from Winnipeg Canada

Hi Gary_k:
One of the nicest fish I ever ate was in Winnipeg at the Fort Gary Hotel....." Winnipeg Gold Eye " But your after the "lunkers".
No more reason to go to Alabama, there are largemouth bass in Presa de Hanabanilla in the very south of Villa Clara provincia...not too close to Guardalavaca. It is majestic here at presa de Hanabanilla, lush ferns, roller-coaster roads and accommodation can be had at Topes de Collantes. I must confess I have not fished here but I have seen "the catch" . I have fished for largemouth successfuly in Presa Zaza in Sancti Spiritus, you'll be along the shoreline anyway, but the winds can be and are treachorous with no warning.

Oh yea every fisherman wants to know what's in the other guys tackle-box. In mine not much as I am no longer an avid fisherman, sometimes I wish I were...the Japanese say every day you spend on a stream fishing you don't lose that day in your life .....anyhow, I took my 25 yr. old Shakespeare 5'2" clear-tip "UGLY-STICK" , Mitchell reel, (about 30 yr. old), Stern fluorocarbon line-very good in the bright sunny skies of Cuba, caught largemouths with Rapala floaters, crankbaits and jointed minnows. One day caught 6 on Mepps Spinners.
Presa Zaza's surroundings is not very inspiring, a system of irrigation canals and lowlands and the lake is man-made in the sense from what I understand a major damming project.

Samuel Yera is a very good Cuba fishing guide. I fished Hanabanilla with him last year & am booked to fish Lake Leonero this May. You can reach him at ffaunavc@enet.cu. I'm sure he can help with your questions. Good luck
