Hey guys, I'm new to this forum. Thanks to everyone who has contributed all their great advice and wisdom. Will be travelling to Varadero this weekend and was hoping to do some fishing in the Zapata Peninsula. Any info on travel, guides, etc. would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

I fished Laguna Tesoro for largemouth bass in February, 2000 - stayed at Hotel Guama (a Horizontes hotel - http://www.horizontes.cu/ingsitio.htm ) on the lake - but I am not sure that they are still open. It was a nice lake - great bass habitat - the guide's name was Alfredo and he lived in Australia (the nearby town) - best fish was 4 pounds with several smaller. If you go there you will likely need your own tackle.

Rio Hatiguanico, in the following link, holds tarpon, I believe - see here: http://www.cubamania.com/cgi-bin/cubaforums/YaBB.pl?board=fish_cuba;action=display;num=1064068 314

You may be able to arrange a trip to Tesoro from Varadero - I know they send down busloads of alligator-watchers - but I would try to arrange the fishing before you go.

Let us know how you do.

Hi everyone,

Got back on Saturday afternoon. My wife and I had a great time especially after hooking up with 6 other vacationers who have now become friends. Unfortunately I was only able to get a few hours of fishing in and wished I could have discovered cubamania.com a lot sooner for all the helpful info.

We stayed at Sol Sirenas Coral resort in Varadero. We rented a scooter for $25USD and rode east on the main highway Autopista Sur to Canal de Chapelin. I fished along the banks and had a few hits from some gars but didn't hook any. Chris, one of the guys we met, came along with me and he spotted some 15-20 inch "silver" fish but had no luck as I frantically cast my baitfish imitation to them. Chris isn't a fisherman so his description leaves me little to go by as to what kind of fish they were...bonefish perhaps.

Anyhow, I will be going back to Cuba again but the next trip will be specifically for fishing and spouse-free with the guys.

Thanks for the info Wade. It will help for my next trip.

Bent Rod :)
