hi guys, kenny here, i'm a new member, and totally out of touch with this type of communication, please bare with me.
i,and my friend, with our wives are going to Cuba for the first time to cayo coco mid october.
obviosly we intend to do a spot of fishing while we are there(as much as we can get away with), we would greatly appreciate information re, fly fishing-flies to use, spinning-lure types and sizes and any bait methods.
have read lot of stuff on this site, but have not done any of this type of fishing before and need all the info we can get.

hola kenny and welcome to cubamania ... :cheesy:
... i hope that you have gone through the fishing report thread to get an idea about the fly fishing in cayo coco ... tinpusher gave some outstanding first hand accounts about that area ... http://www.cubamania.com/cuba/showthread.php?t=13783
... there is all kinds of spin rod fishing information on this site ... but not too much that you will tire of reading it ... :cheesy:
... i have two bits of advice for you about locations for spin rod fishing ... you can fish from the far west end of the beach area ... there is a huge piece of coral where i have seen locals come to get their fish ... another is to take the paddle boats and/or catamarans and go out to the reef ... it starts about 500 or 600 yards from the shore ... these two options are nearest to you ... and easiest to slip away early in the morning ... :wink2:
... another great spot is from the bridge on the causeway between cayo coco and cayo guillermo (taxi would be about $25 CUC's return ... it is a set rate) ... there you can learn from locals about tricks and tips ... and don't worry about the lingo ... most of the people allowed onto the keys have at least basic english skills ... the rest will be made up in the common denominator ... love of fishing ...
... i'll leave the rest of the gang to advise you further on tackle and bait ... i'm just plain lost with this ... tried to talk tinpusher into using live crabs for fly fishing once ... even teeny tiny ones ... was nearly laughed right off of the board ... :o
ps ... i hope that you will come back to cubamania after your adventure and post your fishing reports on the thread / link i mentioned up top ... :cheesy:

Aldie, Sorry don't know Cayo Largo but if you have any tackle or technique questions post them.
Kenny, Checkout my post Google earth. I have marked the 3 main do it yourself fishing places I came across. The bridge is good for spin rod or try wading the flats with a fly rod on the NE and NW side. The rocks are only good for spin gear. Never got a chance to try the flats to the east of the hotel strip. Walked down there and they looked great. If you can afford it I highly recommend using the Ranchon guides ($120/day one person and $170/day two people).
