I'm planning a trip to Cayo Largo for a holiday and to catch bonefish,i'm just wondering if my SageRPL #7,10ft long would be upto it? Also i'm thinking about buying a new reel under £170 can anyone recommend one. Any other recommendations on other equipment would also be welcome.Thanks.

A 7wt rod with a WF floating line will work just fine for Cuban bones, but the 10 ft length may hinder you a bit as quick casts are often needed. Redington's new 7/8 Brakewater seems to be selling well since it came out last August and is getting good reviews, but there are 50 different brand reels that will suit your needs. Just be sure you have at least 200 yds of backing in case you latch onto something larger than a Cuban bone.

June is a great time to be anywhere in the Caribbean for bonefish. And yes, there are some good spots on the south side.

Aldie. Hi. I have fished in Cayo largo for the last five years. There are not any bonefish from the beach you need to get out in a boat from the Casa Batida fishing club in the marina, talk to Fabrizio or Mauro who run it, I have an email address if you want it.
I think your 10 foot sage might just be a little long, speed is of the essence in this game. You should also take a 9' aftm 11 with a fighting grip for the tarpon- not to be missed !!
If you go to my website you will see a photo of a good tarpon caught at Cayo Largo by a pal of mine. I designed and tested all my saltwater rods at Cayo largo. I will do you a deal if you bring me some cigars back !! June is good you will have a fabulous time.
Please let me know if you need any other info.
