[smiley=help.gif]Hello all, I'm new to this board and I found it doing a search on Flyfishing in Cuba. My wife and I and our daughter are planning a early spring vacation to Cuba....I'm a die hard Flyfisherman and I am trying to tie a "family" vaction in with a couple of days fishing, Cuba happens to be our 1st choice, which is good for me because from what I understand the flyfishing is fantastic in Cuba. I'm learning that there is better destinations to go for fishing and I've got it semi-narrowed down to Cayo Largo. There is a couple of "all-inclusive" Flyfishing resorts there(which cost related, is way outa my reach) so I figured it would be the best bet to go all inclusive at one of the "non-fishing" resorts...which are about half the cost, and hire a guide to take me fishing.
I would like YOUR opinions on what I have planned so far, aswell as info on hiring guides and boat rentals...and if this is a good choice...
Tight lines, and I look forward to your replies...

Has anyone ever called you an optimist ??? To say "from what I understand the flyfishing is fantastic on Cuba" will leave you sorely disappointed once you get there, and my advice is to go back to whomever told you that and get more information.
There are but a few places in Cuba where the flyfishing is OK, and while Cayo largo is one of them, it does not come close to "fantastic" by my definition. The hotels there are nice, the beaches are nice, and I'm sure your wife and daughter will enjoy their stay. If you're a closet flyfisherman, you'll love the flyfishing and think it is "fantastic," but if you're truely a die hard fly fisherman as you say, once you have been there then you too will find that the flyfishing is not as fantastic as it is in many other saltwater destinations. Is it worth going? Definately.

Hmmmm...now you have me really confused, from what I have read and been told Cuba offers some great flyfishing opportunities. When I called myself a "die-hard", I was not refering to warm water tropical fishing, so really any opportunity to have a chance at a Bone or Permit would be AWESOME to say the least. I spent two weeks in Hawaii and fished a fair bit a couple of years ago....I never caught a damn thing but still doesnt take away from the "die-hard" experience, its not all about catching fish. I have spent about the last 15 years chasing Pacific Salmon on the fly aswell as Steelhead and Searun Cutthroat Trout which are the local "die-hard" fishing opportunities. My pocket book limits my abbilities to try some of the more exotic locations, such as the Christmas Islands or Belize, for this reason Cuba seemed like a Great starter.
Still looking for input....Thanks, ;D, I would like more info on areas and availability of guides.

You and your family will all enjoy Cayo Largo, and while your chance of a shot at a permit are close to zero, you should have no problem getting shots at bonefish and maybe a few other miscellanelos species.

I am also thinking of Cayo Largo. Did you go? How was it? Do you think it is the best place to go for Bones? Who did you book with?
