Does anyone know the significance of the stone Hematite for Cubans? I recieved a beautiful necklace from my friend in Cuba, with a large Hematite stone . (Olive green) I remember one of my other friends saying that hematite had symbolic significance
for Cubans. I was a wreck as this happened just before I had to leave, I can't find any information.
thanks guys.

it could be, it is olive green and quite large...i have had a lot of comments on it, how beautiful it is and that it is rare to have one as large as the one i have............. I just spoke to the person who gave it to me, a long conversation, he said to never take the stone off and btw Kubanita, i have several people in Cardenas that will help me find Carlos' son, I have a driver for two days...they are setting it up for me, the medicines and eyeglasses & supplies will all be brought to remote areas, like Perico...and I'll have one of my friends come with me to deliver these things....even though i won't be staying at the resort or any for that matter again...i can also come and go during the day or evening at the hotel, drink there, eat there and they won't charge me a cent..........um, i am pretty overwhelmed....all is not well with my friends and i wish i could get their sooner..........

Hematite is metallic black or brownish red, up to the blood red for which it is named. Lateritic soil (Cuban soil) has a high hematite content giving it a rusty appearance and it is the main mineral in iron ore. Native americans used it for face paint etc.
Gem quality stuff is, of course, rare. As for the green colour, my old textbook says that much of the hematite in Cuba has been derived from the leaching of serpentine which is usually green. 'Olive' green suggests something else, however, and it might be worth checking with a gemologist or the like.
