Anyone fish the western end of Cuba? Including the extreme western end - the Peninsula de Gunahacabibes, but am interested in any other location west of Havana. I have fished several areas west of Havana that looked "real fishy" with limited success due to netting, but am interested in anyone's experience in this part of Cuba.

I have considerable experience in that part of Cuba, but it doesn't exactly involve fish, Mr. Fish. Do you want to hear about my experiences anyway? I am sure you would find them very very interestinghttp://www.cubamania.com/cuba/images/icons/icon10.gif

Being a fisherman yourself, you would probably like to first hear the story about Yuniesky. I met him when the Playa Del Carmen Ferry was forced to divert to Maria La Gorda because of a Hurricane approaching Havana which I think maybe was Michelle a few years ago. Yuni was actually from the area around Punta Plumajes on the north coast of the Peninsula de Guanahacabibes. He was himself a fisherman and was able to fish a lot because the area is so deserted and unpatroled. He sells his fish in an illegal private practise - often to Mexican fishermen who show up not far from the Cuban coast. He has a relatively large boat hidden there. Seems that a Mexican ran aground there some time ago and had a sudden heart attack and died so they just buried him because it would have created too many problems reporting all this to the authorities. Anyway he bragged that it was so big (his boat that is) that he could sail off to Venezuela if he wanted, but the furthest they ever got was to Cancun but they didn't even try to moor there - decided that they had no interest in Mexico (most Cubans don't like Mexicans a lot I have discovered), so decided to go back home.

Anyway, he invited me up to Punta P to see his boat and.... stuff. He had a scooter and it was a very fun ride, especially for him as I had to hold onto whatever I could find sticking up to hold onto (maybe you remember the story about the horse without a saddle horn?) Anyway, we finally got there, and... you know.... I don't think I can tell you anymore about Yuni.

So we can move on to Julio... No, I could'nt tell you that one with my boys sleeping in the room next door cuz that just doesn't seem right. Maybe Sergio.... no that's not exactly for public viewing either.

Guess this wasn't such a good idea, was it? Maybe if you are lucky someone will show up with a fishing story that involves fish......... Not nearly as interesting or as much fun but at least printable on a public form... probably...

OK, no problema.

BTW, do I remember that you live in area that will be affected by Hurricane Dean that is currently churning it's way throiugh the Caribbean? If so, make sure the ferrie is tied up securely, and take care yourself.

The ferry is in the Keys. I will be fishing off of it today.

Fantasia, are those your underthings hanging on the railings? If so, I must say, very impressed.

Sounds like you caught a Cuban fish very commonly knows as puntapinga
They come in all sizes and colors, although the big-ones are frequently caught in the Oriente province, from what I hear.LMAO

Peter Piranha. Mr. Fish did not ask about my experiences in Oriente, so I did not reveal those. But you are right - the "fish" are bigger and better in Oriente - and they last longer too http://www.cubamania.com/cuba/images/icons/icon10.gif
