Cuba scored four runs in the seventh inning, which was the difference in the game.

Phillippe Aumont of Gatineau, Que., started on the mound for the Canadians in his senior team debut. The 18-year-old was solid, allowing only two hits with a strikeout in two innings of work.

"I felt great out there," Aumont said. "I was able to make adjustments and everything was working in the bullpen (before the game).

"It was a big thing for me to get the start against Cuba; knowing how good these guys are, it gives a big boost in confidence."

Scott Richmond of Langley, B.C., entered in relief and had a solid outing despite taking the loss. He allowed four runs on nine hits with a strikeout in four innings pitched. He gave up the final two runs in the seventh before being relieved by Mike Kusiewicz of Ottawa.

Trailing 6-1 in the ninth, the Canadians put two runs on the board to close the gap. After a pair of singles by Ottawa's Sebastien Boucher and Matt Rogelstad of New Westminster, B.C., Kevin Nicholson of Langley, B.C., belted a two-run single.

"We showed today that we weren't going to give up and that we weren't going to back down," said Nicholson, who was 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a walk. "I know it's a tough loss, but we have four more games left and I look at us coming back (Saturday) with a strong game."

6-3 final score. Cuba did not have an easy time and they have their best players there. Canada's team is composed of young players they are evaluating for the Olympics. None of our major leaguers are there. I don't know if they will be allowed to play.

Not blaming our young'uns - same as it used to be in hockey against the Russkies.

This tournament is just a tuneup for the Olympics.
Canada beat Venezuela 6-3 today. They are still in there. Won 4 and lost 2.

It's not getting media coverage anywhere. People are not interested at all so no coverage.

Sorry, I was wrong. They bribed the umpire...:D

The US is world champion for the first time since 1974! That is 33 years ago! In between Cuba was the world champ for 12 times and South Korea 1 time. There certainly is some spirit of change in the air... Must be because Fidel is dead...;)
