just had two weeks in cayo santa maria, stayed at the hotel Melia Las Dunas fished off the beach in front of the hotel plenty of baracuda on red and white poppers, if you walk to the right as you enter the beach there are miles of quiet beach and shallow water, you can spot baracuda every few meters and cast your poppers to them, there are plenty of sting rays if you want to catch them, some very large ones. The boys who take you out on the hotels catermarans will let you take your tackle with you for 10 cuc per hour, i went a few times some very large bara`s king makeral, snapper.
be discrete when asking the catermaran boys as it is against hotel policy to take fishing gear. if you go to the left as you enter the beach walk for about a mile the reef comes right up to the beach, plety of different species of bait fish use shrimp which you can get from the resteraunt for a small tip, and learn this "por favor, necisito carnada, para mi pasar tiempo pescando" it`s a polite way to ask for shrimp for fishing.
