Hi all. I'm starting this thread so that anyone returning can update the progress of any rebuild work that they actually see. Is better not to report what you hear because you'll hear plenty!
To start.... The pier has been surveyed in November by a bloke with a theodolite.

I was in Cuba for a week and had good time. Where is this pier that you are talking about ? I am interested in going back there and do some fishing. Thank you.

The Peir is Broke, Snaped in Half right down the middle ,,, half is under the sea, the entrance is boarded up but just walk around ,, or use a paddle boat to get to the end cause you can't walk to the second half

I know I said it's best th only report what you actually see but..... I've just spoken to the management at the Melia. (a very reliable & honest bloke that ishelping to sort the pier out)
The situation is that they at present cannot get the right type of wood for the walkway, and are still trying to aquire this. Also they need a combination of both good weather & low water to complete the work.
As yet there is no news as to when it may be finished.

the pier taken a couple of weeks ago.
my first attempt at an 8 image photostitch with this camera and software, so thought I'd play around with it. The image pan is too large for a direct image attachment.
wish'n we were there. :D

Hi all,
I am off to the Melia over the Easter period, any news on the state of the pier?
I know the pier is convenient for fishing and lets face it, keeping the misses happy, but in my experience with the laydeez this is an unoptainable dream fellas. Much better then to sit them down on a nice comfy sunbed, tip a waiter to supply them with regular alcholic drinks, wave a finger in the general direction of the sea and say 'thats where i'll be, see you later'. Top this off with a peck on the cheek and its job done!
Now get your tackle, a couple of mates and as much crystal as you can carry, jump in a taxi and bugger off up to pillar rocks for a few hours.
If your lucky, when you get back the alchaol will have worked and your misses will whisk you off to your room for some sweet luvin(although this is unlikely)!
I'll be back in the Daiquiri on the 24th sept for 2 weeks if anyone's up for fishing, couple of my mates out there the same time Jonny boy and the Cobbler.
xx:rolleyes4

Not evil Sherry. Just realistic. What would you do, slightly or very tipsy, with a handsome Cubano, if your husband left you to your own (and his!) devices for the afternoon? Dumped for some fish? No way, Jose -- and give me Jose, please please please give me Jose!!
I usually don't interfere much with the fishin' guys but sorry guys, Mark laid himself wide open for this. Gotta defend the wives in this case.

And what to think of those 2 week angling trips down south with the boys.... those long summer weekends in the remote parks chasing Speckies ... and those winter weekends away ice fishing with the boys on remote lakes... and..
Hey, I see a fishing liscence and spinning rod for Mothers day .. and throw in a few lures, eh. The perfect fishing partner. Dang, thanks Fan for bringing this to our attention.

I am back from one week vacation at melia cayo guillermo. Well, the pier is still broken and unaccessible after the first 60 yards. Its still a very good spot for snorkeling (then you dont care if it is still broken or not, you just swim along), and decent fishing is possible on the accessible part, or if you take a pedal boat and cruise to the end of the pier. The kid had the time of his life one day when he caught 40 small fish, using small hooks and steel leader, and camarones (shrimps) from the buffet! We saw some barracudas up to 2,5 feet long while snorkeling, but couldnt decide them to bite our live baits or other lures.

Just back from 2 weeks in Melia, No work at all being done on the pier, still shut off after about a 1/3 of the way along. Still plenty room for fishing tho, although when snorkling you can see most of the fish hang around under the second part of the pier thats shut off. Can easily take a pedalo or canoe over mind you.
Plenty snapper and such like getting caught and the occasional Barracuda.

Was at the Melia for 1 week in June and as of yet the pier has not been touched.
I received an e-mail from from hotel manager just today and apparently they have the materials but are just waiting for tropical storm "Bertha" to pass by before they commence repairs.

Hi Guys,
Tropical storm Fay looks bad for the Melia Pier by my reckoning its going to pass straight over the Cayos and i'm not sure whats left of the pier can withstand another battering! I know lives are the most important thing here but i have great confidense in Cuba's ability to mobalise people in an emergency, but nobody can move the pier!

I just returned on Friday night after a week at the MCG.The lookout post on the pier is gone so are all of the huts. The "palm tree" arch at the beginning of the pier has fallen over as well. But ....there is good news and your hearing it first. The wood to rebuild the pier has been purchased and stored and the papperworked has all been signed for the pier to be rebuilt as soon as this hurricane season is over.On Thursday there were electritians removing the leftover wiring that was still attached.I will put picture on Webshots for all to see.I have asked a manager at the hotel to E-mail me pics of the rebuild as it goes.
Cheers....

I sail BC Canada coast April to Sept....gold panning and fishing. This thread has been great reading ....sounds like a very laid back fisher friendly place. Just wondering about accommodation outside of all inclusives. Is this possible in this area for a month or 2?
Thanks in advance

Not really SeaScene..... You will get somewhere in Moron to stay with a local family or small tourist hostel but you'll be about 1hr 45mins from fishing the Cayo's. By the time you've hired a car or paid for taxi's you may as well take the all inclusive.
Someone else on this site will know a good place to stay I'm sure. It may be worth starting a new thread so that people can add info' as time goes on.
Regards, Dave.

You won't find private accomodation in the Cayos, the government does not grant Casa licenses in order to protect the hotels in those areas.
¿Where does Darni sail out of?

Hi Seascene,
There are two places out of the main resorts you can stay at; I haven't used either so can't vouch for them.
First, Sitio La Guira, an inland ranch near Parque Baga, which has rooms or palapa-style huts for rent. Also has a restaurant.
Second, there are some beach cabins at Campismo Cayo Coco on Playa Uvo Caleta, west of the hotel strip. I'm pretty sure this is quite close to a beach restaurant serving lobster or shrimp.
Both these places are very much off the beaten track, and the latter is apparently popular with locals (that will apply more so now that restrictions for Cubans visiting the Cayos have been relaxed). Also, I have no idea what state they'll be in after the recent hurricanes.
FYI, the Cuban tourist visa form allows you to stay 30 days, but may be renewed for another 30. The small print on the back states: "Not valid to stay outside hotels or in other non-authorised accommodation", which I guess rules out camping.

Hi Jacd....
The boat overwinters in Nanaimo. In April I head out for oyster/clam feasting and owning the ocean pretty much to myself. In May I start for the north country.
However, it would not take much imagination to keep my boat somewhere in the Carib. It would be a great adventure to head south and through the Panama. Last year I visited Luperon in the DR for a taste of what the Carib would be like for sailing. Got to admit...that part of the world has a lot of appeal. I remember 4 yrs ago biking from Manzanillo to Santiago de Cuba along the coast.... looked gorgeous and I did not see a single sail along the entire route.

Hey Gary
Could you maybe turn on your pm's (private messages) for people, like me, who might want to can contact you on the forum but off the board. You do this by going into the User CP at the top of the page, clicking on Edit Options, then the first thing you can edit is "Receive Email."
Seems like there are a few people here who are really interested in you, Admiral :smiley2:

Thanks MarkTheShark.... Does not sound very hopeful to find a cabin rental for a month or 2 in this area. How about another part of Cuba where I guy could get a cabin or apartment rental....some sun and fishing without the high cost of all inclusives. I recollect about 10 yrs ago being in Tamarindo Costa Rica and some great beach fishing....little huts on beach would cook up your catch and lots of cold beer available. I stayed in a local motel ...small place but clean.
..Gary
Good to hear about the pier re-build as I shall be visiting Cuba for the first time, next March, and staying at the Melia.
No doubt, I'll be coming on here nearer the time and boring you all with a thousand and one questions about how to go about catching anything at all!

Hi all ,
The good news is the pier is being re-built ,the bad news is i think it will take some considerable time! While i was there i spoke to steve ,Baino's mate and he had offered the workers 100 cuc if they could re-build 100 yds inside the week and boy they we're trying hard but i think they had run out of wood again! Apparently the crew are the same guys who rebuilt the pier to it's longest point a few years back, so that could be good .681

There is a strange secret to viewing the imbedded pictures on this site.
Here's how it works for me. "Log out," and then come back to the Fishing Forum, but do not log back in. At least for me, when I do this I can then view the photos.

I will keep everyone posted on damages if I can. Lou may be able to find something out about the pier.
For anything else, Lou will probably let me know, and I have a friend out there atm (the same friend who was there when Ike hit  she's just unlucky with hurricanes!!). She's supposed to be flying home today... somehow I think there'll be a stop to that!!!
