Hi All,

I'm staying at Breezes Jibacoa hotel in April and having never been to Cuba have no idea of the local shore fishing potential. I am a keen bass angler in the UK and do a lot of spinning/plugging around local shores and from my fishing kayak. I also fly fish for bass and pike. I understand that there is a coral reef within easy snorkelling distance of the shore at the hotel so assume that the potential for picking up barracuda, snook, snapper, tarpon etc., must be pretty good, but maybe it's not!!. Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks

I would not recommend fishing from the rather small resort beach unless you get up real early in the morning. But to the left or right of the resort(s) beach which is rather rocky I'm sure you will do well at casting for fish. Another way of fishing would be to go out with one of the kayaks. If you do catch fish you could always walk a short distance away from the resort and give it to one of the locals. I'm sure it will be very appreciated. I've been to Jibacoa 2x for a total of 3 weeks...did a lot of snorkelling and always did see keeper fish. Enjoy your holidays at my favourite Cuba resort

I was at Cameleon for a week. Great place for diving and fishing from the shore. I did most of my fishing early in the morning before breakfast and at night after dinner from the shore. Look for sea grass bed and cast your hook onto the sea grass bed and wait for them to take your bait. I was using shrimp, sardine for bait. I had a lindy rig set up with a 15 lb leader line and a 3 oz lead with a small hook. I was catching 14 inches to 20 inches snappers at night and some eel too. I also went out with the paddle boat and trot for Barracuda with no luck. Bring steel leader and big deep diver hard bait for the barracuda. I have heard that the surgical tube lure work very good for Barracuda too. Check out Cabelas website for those surgical tube lure. good luck

Hi Nick and Laut,

Many thanks for taking the trouble to respond to my query about Jibacoa fishing; I'll certainly follow your advice and report back after the holiday.

Kind Regards
