Havana, December 28 (Prensa Latina).- Teams from Havana, Pinar del Rio and
Industriales accumulate most victories at the 44th Cuban National Baseball
Series, following their performances over the weekend.
On Sunday, Group B leader La Habana came from a 2-run deficit to defeat
Sancti Spiritus 6-5 in the nine inning. Reliever Jose Angel Garcia picked
the win, while right-hander Yovany Aragon lost the game.
Havana experienced outfielder Luis Ignacio Gonzalez continued wildly batting
and now leads hits with 49.
Western Division´s Havana (23-10) is 1.5 games ahead of neighboring Havana´s
Industriales (22-12), which beat Cienfuegos 3-1. Lefthander Arleys Sanchez
pitched brilliantly before being relieved by Frank Javier Menendez, who
retired 12 batters and only allowed one single.
Pinar del Rio (22-11), which is easily commanding the Group A, downed
Metropolitanos 2-1. Fast right-hander Pedro Luis Lazo was dominant and
struck out 6 during eight innings.
His rival, Lazaro de la Torre, the oldest player who has participated in
Cuban national series, also pitched excellently but could not grab his first
victory in the current season.
Eastern Division Group D leader Santiago de Cuba´s right-hander Danny
Betancourt was an enigma for Granma players, who only batted six hits, and
won 7-1.
In the same division, Group C leader Las Tunas was defeated by Villa Clara´s
pitcher Ediabel Garcia 3-2.
Other winners on Sunday´s matches were the Isle of Youth, Guantanamo and
Ciego de Avila.
La Habana-Industriales and Villa Clara-Ciego de Avila matches stand out in
the Tuesday-Thursday sets before the New Year´s recess.
Las Tunas first baseman Juan Carlos Pedroso, leading homeruns (14), runs
(37) and slugging (736), and Camaguey´s first baseman Loidel Chapelli (393
average) have been great in the offensive.

average (0.65) and remains invincible in four starts. Las Tunas´ Ubisney
Bermudez leads most wins with 6.
