I visited Guanabo Playa Del Este last month and I am amased that tourists would go there. The beach was filthy bottles cans plastic bags and diches from towme draining across the beach. Even if it was cleaned up the beach is unattractive lots of stones and few trees. It is probably the least attractive beach I have found in Cuba ....Cuba has so many beautiful , really beautiful beaches I was mad at myself for wasting even a few hours there. Now that the police have rounded up the prostitutes the beach was almost deserted....only thr debris remained. A few klm closer to Havana the Playe Del Este Santa Maria was a big improvement although the few huts offering food were more expensive than some of the fine hotel restraunts in Havana.

I'm not the specialist about Havana's playas (maybe zaragozana ?). I think Guanabo is too close from Havana to be a great place.
I have my own location I cherished because very discreet, almost no tourist, no more than 5 o 7 persons a day, ... until last time when I discovered it was becoming more and more like a tourist beach with all the chairs aligned, umbrellas, ... There still are not too much people and no cubans harassing you to buy drinks or food, but I'm not sure how it will be next time.
It might be more useful to have a 'Best playa' thread than the 'Best pizzeria'.

I am planning on spending about two - three weeks in the Guanabo area in Dec.02. Does anyone know of a private house with two bedrooms to rent in that area? I read the site advertising a few places but they are very expensive. We're looking for something around $50 U.S. per night for two people/two bedrooms. IS there anything out there?
Thanks,

Bailarin, I'm sure there are even cheaper places, you could have a two bedroom for maybe 30-40$ per night. But it's difficult to have an adress from here. Why don't you ask your boyfriend to ask around to find the cheapest places? The houses all have a little sign on their door, so it's easy for him to find and look for the best places. Before meeting my friend (i always stay at her house now) my boyfriend use to take one day of vacation to go look for houses for me, then I'd call him and he'd give me the adress...after a day or two of looking he always found houses that charged 10$ per night, very nice places...if he asks, since he's a cuban, he can have a cheaper price, or he could offer them a price for two weeks. That's what I used to do, and it worked...ask him to do that before you go. :)
