El Hueco

The 'paladar' providing some of the best pizzas in town has reopened here for the third time. 'El Hueco' has a new chef and the menu now includes other Italian dishes along with the ubiquitous fried pork and chicken. But pizza is what 'El Hueco' is really about and the choice now ranges from the basic cheese at $1.50 to the 'El Hueco' ham, salami, tuna, onion, pepper, pineapple and olive special at $3.50. Cuban pizzas are a long way from Italy but at 'El Hueco' they are at their best.

Calle 23 #1414 e/ 20 y 22, Vedado (5 37 300752). Open noon-midnight daily. Average $2.
No credit cards.

great point! i agree ... paladars are the way to go!
i usually get a pizza here while i wait for my art certificates!

my favorite paladar is La Terracita in Cojimar... you can see cojimar harbor from the rooftop terrace! simple but great cuban fare! BEST BLACK BEANS AND RICE IN CUBA!
my cubans friend roll there eyes when i order it... they dont want any... but when they try some...THEY AGREE!
i dont think they can have a better compliment!
of course they cant sell fish! *;) ;) and cojimar is a fishing village...so fresh fish is abundant!! *cojimar was the site of hemingways "old man and the sea"... you can still visit gregorios friend and captain...and one of the inspirations for the "old man"... he just turned a young 104 years old this past july! living history is gregorio!!

My favourite - Piccolo in Guanabo, I think it was.

Prado y Neptuno is good. The pizzeria in the Cohiba is not bad. Although the Pizza Nova ones are good, I find them a little soulless.

Got taken to a place near Habana Libre last week - told it had the best in Habana - closed - no hay pizzas.

There is a pizzeria in Barrio Chino where no tourist goes. Have to come early or wait in the queue with cubans. 8 $ (last time I came - March 2001) for the 'complete one' with langusta, chorizo, camarones... and all the stuff. Good place also, quiet, cozy, not too much light.. y lo gusta a los camareros si vienes con una chica linda. Very romantic place.
A restaurant in the Inglaterra (not The restaurant, as there are two) has a pizza de camaron qué me gusta tambien, but a little bit more pricy and tiny. But quality is not quantity... et le cadre est si magnifique.

I forgot to say that I do agree with Zaragozana : best place to eat es en la casa.
You don't realize how a cuban girl will be impressed if you do her la comida, simple but fine, serve it on well dressed table and act as a gentleman.
