Hola Everyone, what type of art requires the certificates to be taken out of Cuba? Does the art that you purchase in Havana at the big market count? What type of certificate is it that is required, and where do you get them? I love the bright, colourful ones you see in the street vendors booths but I have never bought any as I wasnt sure of the paper work.
This site is great.......I get to ask all my questions....and get a gold mine of information back......thanks everyone! JM

art on paper and smaller works (12 x 12) generally do not need stamps! i like to get stamps or certificates for all the work i purchase!

at the cathedral art fair... i negotiate all my transactions with stamp included! sometimes dealers/artists add this to the price after deal negotiated ! i make an offer and state that my offer includes stamp!

the cost of the stamp at cathedral is $2 a stamp! if artist has license to sell @ cathedral!
unofficial artists pay 5 or 10 each work!!

i have brought art here w/ the artist (unofficial) to get a stamp, and she (stamp official) has looked at it and said... oh no...i cant stamp that...you need a certificate for that!

tourist art= stamp!

fine art = certificate!

if you buy in unnofficial gallery...i always require stamp and again include that in my offer!!

official galleries will have certificate @ gallery most often.

but if you buy direct from licensed/known artist...you will need to get certificate from 'bienes culturas" in vedado! generally the artist will handle this...he will get your passport number and name and go get certificate! ARTIST NEEDS TO SHOW HIS ID AS WELL... he has to show up...you do not!

i believe the hours are only 10 am till 2 in the afternoon. and generally get certificate the next day! so plan accordingly!

in emergency... tip can speed the process up!!

it is in vedado on 17th between 10 y 12th!

if i am waiting to get certicate.... i will eat at pizza nova right down the street! best pizza in cuba!!

the cost for certificate is $10 FOR 1-5 WORKS!

$20 FOR 6-10

$30 FOR 11-15 ETC. ETC !!

hope this does not confuse you more!

bottom line... best to get stamp or certificate...

artist/ dealer usually does this for you... very happy to make sale! but best to state in offer .... include the stamp in cost!
